What a Hvammsvik Hot Springs visit costs, ticket to transfer

The cheapest way into Hvammsvik Hot Springs is the entry ticket alone at ~$80, if you can drive yourself to the fjord. The shared bus from Reykjavík costs ~$160 with entry, a Golden Circle day with the soak at the end runs ~$222, and a private car starts at ~$330. Below are the four side by side, then the costs the fares leave out.

Four ways in, side by side

The table lists the four options on our home page at their regular "from" price per person on GetYourGuide. Prices shift a little with the date and the ticket type you choose, so check the figure for your own day before you plan around it.

Most of the gap between the cheapest and the dearest line is transport. Every option ends at the same pools on the shore of Hvalfjörður, and the guided trips give you about two hours in the water.

The entry ticket sets the floor

The admission package from ~$80 is sold by Hvammsvík Hot Springs itself and holds 4.8 from 300+ reviews on GetYourGuide. It is the only option with no transport, so its real cost depends on how you reach the fjord.

That ~$80 is the Classic package, which covers entry to the pools and facilities. Comfort costs more, with the figure shown on the listing when you pick the type. Our Classic or Comfort guide explains what the extra buys.

With a rental car already booked for the week, this is the cheapest way in by a wide margin. If you would hire a car only for this trip, count the day's rental plus fuel before you set it against the bus.

What the bus fare buys over the ticket

ICELANDIA's bus from BSÍ at ~$160 is our pick, with 4.8 from 600+ reviews on GetYourGuide and 4.9 from 200+ on Viator. The difference over the ticket alone is the transport, about an hour each way with Wi-Fi on board.

The whole trip takes about 4.5 hours, which leaves roughly two hours at the springs. Entry covers all the pools and facilities, along with the changing rooms and showers, and pickup from your hotel is available on the listing.

Bathers in the Hvammsvik shore pools in low golden evening light

A towel and a swimsuit are for rent on site at your cost, and so is anything from the bistro. Reviewers say two hours goes fast, and a sit-down meal can feel rushed on the bus schedule.

Return bus and entry for one fare

ICELANDIA's round trip from the BSÍ Bus Terminal in Reykjavík, with about two hours in the pools on Hvalfjörður. Entry to every pool and the changing rooms is in the price.

The Golden Circle day covers the most ground

Nicetravel's Golden Circle and Hvammsvik day at ~$222 costs more than the bus but adds a full sightseeing loop before the soak. Viator lists the same trip a little higher, with 5.0 from 200+ reviews against 4.9 from 97 on GetYourGuide.

The fare includes your Hvammsvik entry, the stop at Kerið crater and a geothermal park in Hveragerði. You choose the admission type when you book, so a Comfort upgrade changes the total.

Lunch near Strokkur is at your own cost, and the day runs about 11 hours. Our Golden Circle guide lists every stop, which helps you judge whether the extra spend buys sights you would see anyway.

A private car is the dearest per head

North Escape's private return transfer at ~$330 per person on GetYourGuide includes entry with the steam bath, a safety box, Hvammsvík toiletries and a bar wristband. It has only 2 reviews, both 5 stars, so there is little record to go on.

The private trip on Viator comes from a different operator and is priced by group size rather than per head. Food and tips sit outside the GetYourGuide fare. Our private car guide compares the two listings.

What the fares leave out

Few of these prices cover everything you spend on the shore. The extras below come up most often in the listings and in reviews, so set a little aside for them.

  • Towel and wading shoes rental with the Classic ticket and on the bus tour
  • Swimsuit rental on every option, if you travel without one
  • Food and drinks at Stormur Bistro, where reviewers praise the fish soup
  • Drinks at the swim-up bar beyond the one in the Comfort package
  • Lunch on the Golden Circle day, bought near Strokkur
  • Tips for the driver on the private transfer
  • A rental car and fuel if you go with the entry ticket alone

Packing your own towel and swimsuit removes the two most common extras. Our packing guide covers the rest, and the guide to the pools describes the sea dip and the tide that shapes the shore.

Cancelling and paying later

All four options cancel free up to 24 hours before the start. GetYourGuide also lets you reserve now and pay later, which helps when you are still watching the forecast for wind and rain.

That flexibility costs nothing, so book the day you prefer and move it if the weather turns. Our guide to the best time to go covers what each part of the year brings at the fjord.

Which fare suits which trip

With a car already parked at your hotel, the entry ticket from ~$80 is the plain choice. Without one, the bus at ~$160 is the cheapest way to reach the springs and still leaves a good part of your day free.

If you have one free day and have not yet seen the Golden Circle, the Nicetravel trip folds both into a single fare. Travelers who want their own timetable, or more time in the water, can look at the private transfer.

Children under 10 are not admitted on any option, and guests under 18 need an adult with them. Weighing Hvammsvik against the better-known lagoon near the airport? Our Blue Lagoon comparison sets the two side by side.

Before you pay

Money questions before you book

What is the cheapest way to visit Hvammsvik Hot Springs?

The admission package from ~$80, if you already have a car. Without one, ICELANDIA's bus from the BSÍ terminal at ~$160 is the cheapest option with both transport and entry included.

Is a towel included in the price?

Not with the Classic ticket or on ICELANDIA's bus, so you bring your own or rent one on site. The Comfort package includes a rental towel and wading shoes.

Is food included on any of the tours?

No. Food at the springs is extra on all four options, and lunch on the Golden Circle day is bought near Strokkur at your own cost.

Can I cancel if the weather turns?

Yes. Every option here can be cancelled at no charge until a day before it starts, and GetYourGuide lets you reserve now and pay later.

Can children come along?

Only from age 10, and guests under 18 need an adult with them. That rule applies to every option, since all four end at the same pools.
